Summer 2013 - Portland

Better late than never....

How do I begin to explain what I lived this past summer? I knew it would be an amazing one for me. The best I've had so far. The summer that taught me all this new stuff about myself. It opened my eyes to what I want in my life. It opened the door to new challenges and new experiences. I met new people, amazing people that made an impact in my life (THANK YOU). I discovered so much more than just a different state in the U.S. I discovered a little bit more about myself, and the path I want to follow. This summer was so much more than just an internship, it was life-changing.

To describe my summer I'm going to separate it in different posts.

Portland, OR

First of all, Portland is beautiful. It is this whole new world that I was introduced by my sister. Without her, this summer would have never happened. I have told her how grateful I am, but I don't think she has any idea of how GRATEFUL I am. She opened the door to this whole new world that I feel in love with. THANK YOU x infinity. If you've seen Portlandia you get this sense of this whimsical place, with passionate people, amazing food, and great places. It is all that. People are so amazing in this city.

During my stay in this 'cool' city I created a list of Why Portland is Awesome  (random order)

  • Best summer weather
  • People are really nice, like really nice. All the time, even when driving.

  • People don't care about society's expectations.
  • You get city and nature at the same time.
  • The FOOD is amazing.
  • Happy Hours
  • Movies and concerts at the parks
  • Museums
  • Walking. Just walking around the city. You never know what you'll bump into.

New Found Inspiration - Alex Prager

I have always hated group presentations. There's no denying that working with other people that are also busy is exhausting, but I somehow got really excited when researching my project. We chose to present on Alex Prager. She is an amazing self-thought photographer who uses amazing colors and fashion from the 1940s, 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

She lives and works in Los Angeles. She has been in many publications, galleries and institutions worldwide and she is so young (born in 1979). Her inspiration was William Eggleston, and now she has become one of mine. She photographs her friends, looks on her facebook and looks for potential subjects, which is what I do. Whenever I see a friend of a friend, or I meet someone I would like to photograph I ask them.

Besides photography she has work with video directed a video gallery of cinematic villainy, inspired by nefarious icons and featuring the best performers from the year in film for the New York Times called Touch of Evil. You guys should check it out!

The way Alex Prager has utilized colors, and all the props on her work has really inspired me into working with more colors and maybe venture into more cinematographic work. Who knows?! But I am excited to find more awesome inspiration! If you know about work I might enjoy, comment and let me know!

Love,

Estefii
